Richard Gowers is a versatile British musician, and performs actively as a song and chamber pianist, conductor and organist.

After a year at the Mendelssohn Conservatoire in Leipzig, he spent three years as organ scholar of King’s College, Cambridge and graduated with a starred first class degree in Music. His tenure culminated in the 2016 Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, and the release of his critically acclaimed solo disc of Messiaen La Nativité du Seigneur, which was a Gramophone ‘Editor’s Choice’.

In 2017 he received a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music, where he trained as a pianist with Michael Dussek and Joseph Middleton and won prizes for song accompaniment and chamber music. In April 2019 he took part in Wigmore Hall’s first Liederabend of the works of Carl Loewe with members of the Royal Academy Song Circle. In duo partnership with the tenor Kieran Carrel he was awarded the Schubert Institute UK Prize at the 2019 Leeds Lieder Festival and was a finalist in the Wigmore Hall Song Competition.

In addition to extensive piano collaborations, Richard is under demand as a concert organist. In 2013 he won the Northern Ireland International Organ Competition, and in 2019 he won the Matthew Martin Prize in the St Albans International Organ Competition. Recent recitals have included festivals in Toulouse, St Albans, Germany, the USA and Australia, and major venues in the UK.  He also works as an accompanist for the BBC Singers, London Symphony Chorus and Philharmonia Chorus; as an ensemble member he has performed with the Academy of Ancient Music, Aurora Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia, CBSO, LPO, OAE, Philharmonia and RPO. He is a keen conductor of choirs and orchestras, and has repetiteured for Hampstead Garden Opera, Waterperry Opera and at the Royal Opera House.

Richard teaches undergraduate music at Cambridge University and organ at Tiffin School and Trinity Laban Conservatoire. He is the Director of Music at St Saviour’s Church, Pimlico, where he curates a series of song and chamber music concerts.
