The late Renaissance composer Orlando di Lasso (also called Orlande de Lassus) was born in the Habsburg Netherlands and worked for most of his life in Munich, but the city of Venice played an important role in his career. This was the city where much of his music was published, and it was also where he built relationships with two leading composers of the day: Andrea Gabrieli, and his nephew Giovanni Gabrieli. A 1567 letter describes one of Lassus' visits to Venice, describing him as a ‘lively and a good companion’. This programme explores Lassus' relationship with Venice, including works he published in Venice, music that he based on models by Venetian madrigalists, and the pieces by him and the Gabrielis that reveal their influence on one another.
