St. John's Access Project

St. John's, Smith Square is a Grade One listed building, one of the most important and rare examples of the work of its Architect, Thomas Archer. It is thus a very important part of our historical and cultural heritage. However, as an 18th century building, all levels are accessed by steps. Hence we have embarked on a project to make St. John’s totally accessible to all.

No scheme to adapt a complex historical building in a sensitive manner will be inexpensive. St. John's does not receive any state subsidy but operates on the same scale as many venues which receive regular funding. However, we endeavour to develop our facilities as much as possible. We are totally committed to finding the funds to make the scheme a reality.

In the summer of 2008 we completed Phase One of the project - this comprised preliminary work to the building in preparation for the installation of the lift and full facilities, which we now hope to undertake over the summer months in 2010 when the funds are fully secured.

We have so far raised over a £1 million leaving us with a shortfall of just over £40,000 to complete Phase Two.

We are now concentrating our fundraising to complete the project on schedule. Any donation would be most gratefully received and will help to bring pleasure to many people at present unable to enjoy the architecture and music of St. John’s.

For more information please email info@sjss.org.uk or call the Administration Department on 020 7222 2168, where someone will be happy to help.
