For this Lunchtime concert, we are joined by a BBC Music Magazine Rising Star, pianist Alexander Soares.

The concert will feature the fizziingly virtuosic Variations (1965) for piano by Britten. Left incomplete by the composer, the remaining six variations have been reconstructed and completed by Colin Matthews and we glimpse the outline of a masterpiece that might have been.

This work is also joined by Ravel’s fifth movement from Le tombeau de Couperin, a Menuet of elegance and beauty with each movement honouring a friend of Ravel's who died in the Great War. Finally, we round of the lunchtime concert with Bridge's Piano Sonata, a piece of motivic material that showcases the inner turmoil of the composer post-war.
