Fool Moon (Il mondo della luna, 1777)

Bampton Classical Opera presents Haydn’s Il mondo della luna in a new English translation by Gilly French as Fool Moon. This three-act dramma giocosa from 1777 is the best-known of several operatic settings of a delightfully crazy libretto by Carlo Goldoni.  As Mozart was later to do with Così fan tutte, Haydn was inspired by a bizarre plot of disguise and deception to create a score of ravishing beauty and wit.  How better to persuade an over-protective but gullible father to allow the marriages of his daughters than to persuade him that he has been transported to the moon?  As always for its annual autumn visit to St John’s, Bampton brings together a lively and accomplished young cast with the outstanding Chroma Ensemble for this staged performance.  It’s out of this world!

We are pleased to confirm that Friday’s performance of Fool Moon is still going ahead. Due to current security arrangements and restricted vehicle access to Smith Square, Bampton Classical Opera will be presenting Fool Moon semi-staged in costume, rather than fully staged as previously advertised. We are happy to answer any questions you may have regarding this concert; please contact the Box Office during office hours by calling 0207 222 1061, or by email at [email protected]

Central London and in particular the Westminster area is likely to be extremely busy.  There are road closures in place including very restricted access to Smith Square.  Please allow extra time to travel to the venue and check your journey before you travel.  We are advised that London Underground and rail services will be the best way to travel around central London.  It is likely that the approach to Smith Square from Victoria tube station is less busy than approaching from Westminster tube station.  We also ask that you have your ID and e-tickets or confirmation email ready as police near Smith Square may ask to see them for access into the square.
