Symphony No. 5 in D minor, Op. 47

The Corinthian Orchestra is delighted to return to St John's Smith Square for a journey through some of the greatest compositional works of the 20th Century.

Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto is notorious for being one of the most difficult pieces in the repertoire - it capitalises full-on virtuosity and we are thrilled to have British-Ukrainian pianist Alexei Grynyuk join us for this tour de force work.

Following the Rachmaninoff is arguably Shostakovich's most iconic and well-known symphony - No. 5.  It was introduced in a newspaper as "A Soviet artist’s response to just criticism", but these were not the composer’s own words.  However, it was a conscious attempt to create a simplified ‘Socialist realist’ style that could be acceptable both to the Soviet Party and to the intelligentsia. This music takes the listener through a wide-range of emotions which will be firmly realised by conductor and Corinthian Orchestra favourite, Leonard Elschenbroich.
