Long considered merely a forerunner of Bach this programme aims to illustrate the genius of Buxtehude as a composer for organ in his own right. Works in stylus fantasticus, ravishing chorale preludes, a passacaglia and a setting of the Te Deum help form a picture of this inspirational composer.

After studies in London and Holland, harpsichordist and organist James Johnstone has forged a career as recitalist, chamber musician, continuo player and teacher. As an organist he has performed widely in Europe on well-known baroque instruments (Haarlem, Groningen, Freiberg, Ottobeuren, Weingarten, Rötha, Grauhof, Naumburg, Roskilde…) as well as in Israel, Colombia, Bolivia, Ecuador and the United States.

James teaches early keyboards at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, and the Royal Academy of Music London. In 2016 he began a critically acclaimed series of  recordings for Metronome Recordings, including the organ works of Bach and Couperin, and on harpsichord the Art of Fugue.
