Works by Juan Hidalgo (tonos, villancicos and music for theatre)
Harpist of the Royal Chapel in Madrid, Juan Hidalgo is one of the key figures in the development of theatrical music in seventeenth-century Spain. His songs, operas and zarzuelas, many of them written in collaboration with Calderón de la Barca, cover an entire era. Less known is his role as author of paraliturgical music, but Hidalgo also wrote Christmas carols and divine music for the most important festivities of the year. Some of these pieces are recovered by Albert Recasens for this concert that offers a diverse portrait of the great Madrid composer. Works by other composers of the period (Torrejón and Velasco, Ruiz de Ribayaz, Sanz, Machado) will put context to this broad vision of Hidalgo.
