Join the London Mozart Players at St John’s Smith Square on Thursday 27th January for a convivial evening of wine and music pairings to celebrate Mozart’s birthday.

Mozart enjoyed a tipple, we are told, so what better way to mark his 266th birthday than with a unique wine-tasting evening – his sublime music paired with especially chosen wines from continental Europe, including his Austrian homeland. LMP’s string players will perform a selection of movements from some much-loved chamber works by Mozart and those he influenced, with leader Simon Blendis sharing the background and context of each. For every piece, wine expert Linn Rothstein will introduce a carefully curated wine which perfectly complements the music, giving formal tasting notes for you to make the most of every sip. The evening also includes a glass of schnapps with which to toast the birthday boy. As with wine, (which is all about the finish), the tasting will end with a flourish – a short chamber concert by LMP’s quartet of acclaimed musicians, during which you may tickle your taste buds with your favourite wine of the evening.

For one night only, St John’s Smith Square will be transformed into a ‘wine cave’, with cabaret-style seating, a selection of nibbles, and table service, ensuring you enjoy the sensory overload to the full. Starting at 6.30pm, and finishing in time for you to catch dinner afterwards, this is the perfect event with which to shake off the January blues, and a wonderful way to celebrate the Austrian maestro and his music. Prost!

Classical pianist Linn Rothstein was a director of Merry Widows Wine, which imported Austrian wine to the UK. She has organised many successful wine-tastings that matched music with wine, including with cellist Raphael Wallfisch and violinist Roman Simovic. Her late husband, Jack Rothstein, a violinist, performed many times with LMP under the baton of Harry Blech.
