Notes from a Small Island is a trio of concerts in which pianist Mark Bebbington showcases major works for piano by British composers of the 20th and 21st centuries.

In the first of these, Mark throws a spotlight on the music of Robert Matthew-Walker (b.1939) with the premiere of The Evening of Memory - a contemplative work inspired by the memory of General Douglas MacArthur and his quest for lasting peace - followed by the darkly dramatic fantasy-sonata evoking Shakespeare's Hamlet.

Complementing Matthew-Walker's works are William Alwyn’s irrepressible Sonata alla Toccata and, finally, Sarnia – John Ireland’s masterful evocation of the island of Guernsey and its ‘unalloyed beauty’ (infused with some colourful impressionism from across the Channel).

*Please note change to original advertised programme.  Simpson Variations and Finale on a theme of Haydn has been withdrawn from the programme and replaced with Robert Matthew-Walker Fantasy-Sonata: Hamlet (Piano Sonata No 3) Opus 34 (1980)
