Salomon Orchestra's 60th anniversary year celebrations continue with a concert of music by Spanish composers. Turina, de Falla and Gerhard provide the passion and mystery in a programme spanning decades of musical styles.

Edmon Colomer pays a most welcome return to conduct us in May. Maestro Colomer has served as Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Eastern Music Festival in the United States of America, the Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra in South Korea, the Orchestre de Picardie in France, the Orquestra Simfònica de Balears, the Orquestra Simfònica del Vallès and the Orquesta Filarmónica de Málaga in Spain.

Joaquín Turina (1882 - 1949) - Ritmos (1927)
Turina took on the advice as well as the example of his older compatriots Albeníz and Falla, and wrote works influenced by the fiery gypsy music of Andalusia. His output includes a handful of dazzling orchestral works such as Ritmos which show him to be second only to Ravel in orchestral wizardry.

Manuel de Falla (1876 - 1946) - Noches en los jardines de España (1915)
De Falla described this piece as "symphonic impressions". The piano part is elaborate, bright and eloquent, but rarely overbearing. The orchestral score is exuberant. It is the most impressionistic work of the master from Cádiz.

Robert Gerhard (1896 - 1970) - Soirées Barcelone (1936-1939 & 1972 completed posthumously)
The plot of this ballet is located in a town in the Catalan Pyrenees during the festivities of the Night of Sant Joan. Fire symbolizes purification and fertility. During this night, two antagonistic religious traditions are mixed, the pagan and the Catholic. These two paradoxical elements appear and intertwine, so that the story becomes a metamorphic representation of the beliefs of the Catalan tradition.
