For hundreds of years, composers have dedicated Christmas vocal music to Mary, celebrating her maternal role. This programme gathers together some of the finest examples of this tradition, including works by a medieval nun, Renaissance cathedral musicians, and some of the most talented choral composers working today. Polyphonic gems by Jean Mouton and Thomas Tallis sit alongside evocative carols by Sarah Cattley and Kerensa Briggs. At the heart of the programme is Nicolas Gombert's inspired Magnificat tertii et octavi toni, which adds a new voice in each verse, culminating in a glorious eight-part finale.
