Four concerts. Three days. Welcome to our first Summer in the Square festival.

Summer in the Square is a three-day long festival encompassing some incredible classical music performances from our fellowship musicians and special guests that will take you across the varied landscapes of Europe, from Ravel’s unique French approach, to the classic and timeless stylings of Mozart and Beethoven.

In “normal times”, Southbank Sinfonia travels to Anghiari every July for a week-long festival in the glorious Italian sunshine. We may not be able to travel to our home away from home this year, but we still want to bring a slice of Italian sun to central London this July.

Connecting people through music is our goal, so we invite you to join us at St John’s Smith Square for this very special festival.

SUMMER IN THE SQUARE: DOUBLE BEETHOVEN

We're excited to welcome back esteemed soloist, Ruth Rogers, to the stage to perform Beethoven's magnificent Violin Concerto in D. 1806 was a year of extraordinary productivity for Beethoven. In addition to the Violin Concerto, this year also saw the creation of his Fourth Piano Concerto, the three Razumovsky String Quartets, and the Leonore Overture No.3. Today, alongside other highly popular violin concertos from the likes of Brahms and Mendelssohn, Beethoven's Violin Concerto is eloquent, thrilling and rich with memorable melodies.

Talking of memorable melodies, Beethoven's Fifth Symphony is perhaps the most famous in the Western canon. From the opening da da da daaaaaaaaa to the rousing finale, this symphony is iconic in its own right. Beethoven started sketches for this symphony in 1804, although the symphony was not fully finished until 1808. Both of these works were written in the same period and therefore share some of Beethoven's best traits - boldness, sensitivity and thrill.
