We are joined by Conductor, Sian Edwards and Soprano, Chloe Morgan (PHOSA winner 2019) for this nostalgic, all American Rush Hour concert, comprised of pieces that reflect on times gone by and the intricacies involved in moving through life.

Commissioned by Carol Cole for the Kronos Quartet, we begin with Missy Mazzoli’s work You Know Me From Here, a twenty minute musical journey exploring the emotional complexity and unpredictable feeling of loss when shedding a previous identity. Through ever shifting musical language, Mazzoli demonstrates the sense of sadness associated with such an event whilst also highlighting its ultimately positive impact by concluding the work in a place of security and resolution. 

Barber's lush work for voice and orchestra, Knoxville: Summer of 1915 similarly expresses this sense of transition, based on the prose poem by James Agee whose depiction of an evening in the American South from the perspective of a small boy conjures a nostalgic, almost dreamlike picture of Knoxville, Tennessee. 

These themes of childhood and old America continue to recur in the work of Ives whose Symphony No 3 is a sentimental work that reminisce on the sounds and experiences of youth, recalling childhood memories of camp meetings through traditional hymn tunes, Civil War songs and bells.
