Stabat Mater

Chaconne in F minor

Pergolesi’s ‘Stabat Mater’, composed in the final weeks before the composer’s tragically early death at the age of 26, is one of the most enduring works of the baroque era. Commissioned by Neapolitan aristocracy for their annual Good Friday reflections on the passion story, Pergolesi’s work is filled with imagery and word painting, perfect for the sequence for the Feast of Seven Dolours of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the ‘Stabat Mater’.
