St John’s Smith Square (SJSS) enjoys great critical acclaim for the artistic and community programme which it delivers, but in the absence of public subsidy, we rely on the support of generous friends and patrons like yourself.

Your help ensures that we can go on serving the community and doing great work.

In brief SJSS has two primary functions. These are:

  1. the maintenance and upkeep of the Grade 1 listed historic church of St John the Evangelist in Smith Square, our home and base of operations; and
  1. to provide a full, varied and dynamic programme of arts and cultural activities within St John’s.

The cost of operating SJSS is in the region of £1 million to £1.25 million per annum. The income SJSS derives from all its activities covers approximately 80% of the costs, leaving an annual shortfall of between £200K and £250K per annum.  SJSS receives no regular subsidy from the public purse.  Every year the Trustees and staff work flat out to secure private donations through gala events, special campaigns and individual philanthropic giving.

SJSS earns income by selling tickets for events, hiring out the hall and generating revenue from the bar and catering operation, as well as from occasional project grants from Arts Council England and trusts and foundations and through individual giving. SJSS is an exceptionally cost-effective registered charity employing only seven people full-time.

We need to raise £250,000 each year to secure the business operation for the medium term.

Our eventual target is to raise £5 million to enable a programme of much-needed investment in the building and secure the longer-term sustainability of the charity.
