Gerard Brooks’s varied European programme begins with music from Germany: J.S.Bach’s scintillating arrangement of a concerto by Johann Ernst is followed by Robert Schumann’s Four Sketches, written originally for pedal piano. Although known for his large-scale organ works, Max Reger was a master of smaller forms: his beautiful and atmospheric Benedictus features the softer sounds of the organ in a reflective ‘prayer in music’. Brooks continues with his own Passacaglia written in memory of a paramedic friend who was one of the first victims of the recent pandemic. Finally to France: Notre Dame organist Louis Vierne is represented by his silvery Impromptu, and the concert concludes with a set of rumbustious variations on an original theme by Alexandre Guilmant.
