2022 will be an exciting year for Southbank Sinfonia at St John's Smith Square with work on the hall and facilities at St John's starting in February, and our 20th anniversary Southbank Sinfonia fellowship commencing in September.

In addition to aligning our programmes, this will allow us to carry out some key maintenance on the hall at St John's, and to lay the groundwork for even greater ambitions - more to follow on these plans soon!

With this deferral you may well wonder what music will be made in the first half of next year. The answer is - lots! While we eagerly await the start of our 2022 Autumn Season and recruit our Southbank Sinfonia fellowship cohort, we are planning various musical treats for our friends and patrons with our vast network of musicians, both Southbank Sinfonia alumni and regular returning artists of St John's Smith Square, including:

  • A celebration of Vaughan Williams' 150th anniversary;

  • Cabaret-style performances in the Crypt of St John's Smith Square (which will remain open during the main hall's closure);

  • A continuation of our new Summer in the Square Festival;

  • A continuation of the St John's Holy Week Festival (in conjunction with Tenebrae);

  • A continuation of the St John's London Festival of Baroque Music;

  • An extended Southbank Sinfonia Anghiari Festival, calling in at the islands of Ischia and Procida, and also mainland Sienna;

  • Growing our work with young and emerging artists, working across our local communities and planning concerts and creative education projects that will feedback into our home projects at St John's Smith Square for many years to come.

Such a prospect sits beyond our usual budget. So, we are launching our 2021 Directors' Appeal to populate the first half of next year with a feast of activity in and around London, including local community projects, workshops, Southbank Sinfonia alumni performances, St John's Smith Square lunchtime performances, and other collaborative performances from world-class visiting artists.

We would greatly appreciate anything you might be prepared to contribute towards keeping the music playing throughout the start of 2022 as we embark on this exciting next chapter as Southbank Sinfonia at St John's Smith Square. Thank you so much for your support.
