La Nativité du Seigneur

Alongside his public persona as an international composer and performer, Olivier Messiaen was for over 60 years the resident organist at the Église de la Sainte-Trinité in central Paris. It was in this church that ‘La Nativité du Seigneur’ was first heard in 1936. Messiaen was aged just 27 when he composed ‘La Nativité’ whilst on holiday in the Alps, though he had already built a prodigious catalogue of organ music. The influences he cites include theology, mountains, and the stained glass windows in medieval cathedrals. ‘La Nativité’ is one of the first works of Messiaen to feature what were to become trademarks of his compositional style, such as musical birdsong and the influence of distant musical styles. It is a monumental cycle of nine movements, leading to the explosion of faith which is ‘Dieu parmi nous’, or ‘God Among Us’.
