Philip Hesketh returns to conduct Salomon Orchestras first concert of 2024, featuring Fenella Humphreys in Korngold's Violin Concerto. Composed in 1945, the work contains the hallmarks of Korngold’s inimitable style: Soaring melodic lines underpinned with rich chromatic harmony and colourful orchestration. The Concert Opens with the overture to Kabalevsky’s opera 'Colas Breugnon' composed in 1938. Weinberg's Symphony No. 3 was composed in 1949, in the post-war period when the Soviet Union was under Joseph Stalin's regime. During this time, many artists and composers in the Soviet Union faced censorship and political pressure to conform to socialist realism, an artistic style that promoted positive depictions of Soviet life.
