London Phoenix Orchestra's centenary season begins with a celebration of the old and the new. 'Century Overture' by Stuart Hancock (once a stalwart of the viola section) has been specially commissioned for the occasion, and is followed by the cello concerto by the orchestra's one-time conductor, Philip White. The second half pairs two works from the orchestra's year of foundation: Honegger's dramatic representation of a steam locomotive, and Respighi's colourful portrait of a great city.
