Beethoven – The Late Quartets - Concert #4
The Revolutionary Drawing Room
Beethoven
String Quartet in Bb major Op. 130
Beethoven
‘Grosse Fuge’ Op. 133

The Revolutionary Drawing Room conclude their Beethoven cycle with the composer’s late quartets, across a series of four afternoon concerts.

Beethoven’s Op. 130, composed in 1825, is the last of his set of three quartets for the Russian Prince Nikolaus Galitzin.  Larger in scale even than Op. 132, its longest movement was placed at the end, and represents a highly unusual fugal finale. ‘Incomprehensible as Chinese’ was the comment of one reviewer, and Beethoven was eventually persuaded to replace this staggering work with a more conventional Rondo form finale.   The original finale became known as the Grosse Fuge, Op. 133, and remains an alternative closing movement to Op. 130.  This programme presents Op. 130 with its replacement Rondo finale alongside the Grosse Fuge.

Each concert lasts approximately one hour and is presented without an interval.

NB. SJSS will be implementing a socially distanced and safe environment. Practical details will be forwarded to ticket holders prior to the event. Should circumstances prevent the concerts from going ahead then full refunds will be provided.
