Symphony no. 2 in D major, Op.43

Colossal melodies, expansive musical landscapes: Southbank Sinfonia and students from Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School join forces for Sibelius’ epic Symphony No.2.

An optimistic, pastoral three note opening motif sounds, and so unfolds this work dubbed as the ‘Symphony of Independence’. From the sunny exuberance of the opening to the dark and sinister second movement, which gives way to a restless Scherzo and ultimately blazing finale, the incredible scale of this symphony is not one to be missed.

Before the Sibelius, there's a chance to hear Anna Meridith's Nautilus. This piece featured on Anna’s 2016 album ‘Varmints’ and was later orchestrated for Southbank Sinfonia to perform alongside Anna and her band at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in 2018.
