On Friday 9 March 2018 St John’s Smith Square is delighted to be hosting a day of celebratory concerts and events marking the 75th birthday of composer Stephen Montague.

The evening concert, at 7.45pm, features three of Stephen’s concertos and includes three European premieres.

Virtuoso soloists Rolf Hind, Nancy Ruffer, Jenna Sung and Oliver Wass will be joined by the Fulham Symphony Orchestra and Marc Dooley for this tour de force show of orchestral colour and soloistic prowess.

Earlier in the day keyboards of various shapes and sizes are featured in all their multi-faceted colours with a series of concerts that include organ, harpsichord and toy piano as well as the more usual concert grand piano and other instrumental groups.

The huge breadth of Stephen’s creative output, stretching over 50 years, will be shown with pieces for electronics, for multiple players and for soloists and with pieces that both show the extremes of technical ability as well as more simple creative expressions.

The celebrations kick off at 1.00pm with ‘After Ives and Beyond’, a concert which unites Stephen’s love of American music past and present, bringing together influences from vernacular American music, the great art-house composers of the 20th century and his own distinctive expression of minimalism.

Come and join us as we celebrate the first 75 years of one of the most distinctive and original voices in British and American musical creativity.

Please Note: the previously advertised performance of Stephen’s Horn Concerto scheduled for 12.00pm, ‘High Noon’, will not go ahead due to operational reasons. The celebrations commence at 1.00pm with ‘After Ives and Beyond.’
